So there I was on the phone with my buddy Nick Larson. It was April, a week or two before Easter. Not only is this one of the busiest times for Pastors but Nick and his wife are about to have their second baby, UNCO east is in a few weeks and his book Never Pray Again has just launched. I may have called him crazy… more than once.
On top of all that his church has decided they would like to do a worship series based on Never Pray Again. Nick and I are both flaming extroverts and do our best work when processing out loud. As his friend and as someone who loves worship planning we decided to work on the series together. A google doc was created and we talked through scriptures and as I worked on this with him I became more intrigued with the idea of what “Never Pray Again” might look like in the midst of worship.
So I joined him in his series.
In the next several weeks I will be posting the worship series “Go and Do Likewise” based loosely on the book “Never Pray Again” by Two Friars and a Fool.
A few comments about the series. Like any worship series what you are about to witness is worship in the midst of community. A specific community, Ashland Presbyterian Church in Hunt Valley, Maryland. I have a very creative team that I work with, you can hear more about them here. I also work with a worship committee and within the confines of our church’s rituals and the reformed order of worship. That being said I serve a very creative place and am given a lot of freedom for a traditional church.
A few other notes about “preaching” through this book. It is possible to endorse a book and not agree with everything in it, in fact, I highly recommend that. The guys are my friends, and my husband is the one who drew the coloring book for the kickstarter. So yes, I have an investment in it. But as we talked about these posts we found it to be intriguing with the idea of posting what a non-author did with these ideas in the confines of worship. They will not agree with everywhere I went or everything I did, good, let’s talk about that… that’s what we do.
I am also preaching a chapter at a time. As I do so I am exegeting a specific text, for a specific time and place, with the moving of the Spirit and bringing my own voice and call to the process. BUT we are putting this series out into the world so you too can think about ways to “Never Pray Again” as a worship series. Join us each Thursday for the posts, I hope you enjoy.
