4) The intolerance of the homosexual agenda. Caving into the homosexual agenda will lead to the radical marginalization of those who oppose homosexual practice and, ultimately, the criminalization of opposition to homosexual behavior. Homosexual activism represents the greatest threat to civil and religious liberties for our children. At stake are such things as: mandatory indoctrination of our children in all school systems, public and accredited private, from kindergarten on, through convocations, skits, videos, workshops, and teacher instruction; loss of one’s job if one does not sign a statement saying that one “values sexual orientation differences”; mandatory workplace attendance of “Gay Pride” events and “Coming Out” celebrations; fines and even imprisonment for speaking out against homosexual practice, even in church services; having one’s children taken out of one’s own home for teaching “homophobic” ideas or, if one’s child professes a homoerotic proclivity, for “child abuse”; loss of accreditation of all Christian colleges and even seminaries that cannot prove “non-discrimination” in the hiring practices towards “gays and lesbians” or that permit any faculty to speak or publish in a manner critical of homosexual behavior per se; and refusal of colleges and universities to admit any students who do not sign statements affirming the value of homoerotic relationships. For documentation of these matters, see the book by Alan Sears and Craig Osten, The Homosexual Agenda. See also my documentation on pages 10-18 of my critique of David Balch.
Again Gagnon resorts to scare tactics in his use of language. He presents the homosexual agenda as if it were a vast and powerful conspiracy, which is simply not the case. He also presents the results of the success of this conspiracy in ridiculous terms as resulting in a 1984-esque police state. One wonders where the connection between homosexuality and fascism comes from in Gagnon’s mind. Furthermore saying “homosexual activism represents the greatest threat to civil and religious liberties for our children,” given the present situation in our country and the egregious damage done to our civil liberties by the Patriot Act and the Military Commissions Act, is asinine.
It is a common tactic to turn the rhetoric of intolerance back on the victims of discrimination. One hears all the time about “reverse discrimination” from people who oppose Affirmative Action, but it is simply not credible. It is not credible from Gagnon for the simple reason that he is a white heterosexual male professor at a graduate institution. Claims of discrimination from him sound like the tripe that they are. At the point that we have achieved in this society something even vaguely approaching equality in terms of race, gender, ethnicity or any other category then we will have a basis for discussing the way that the oppressors are also oppressed. So long as one belongs clearly in the camp of the oppressor, however, claims to be oppressed are absurd.
The most extreme claims Gagnon makes in this argument are plain unbelievable. The thriving culture of racism in this country makes it obvious that official cultural acceptance and equality under law are almost no threat to the persistence of bigotry. Those who wish to go on advocating prejudice against homosexuals will not be very much impeded by official steps toward acceptance. Fines and imprisonment for bigoted speech against homosexuals will be no more a reality than they are now for misogynist or racist comments.
Not all the claims Gagnon makes are completely beyond reason though. It is likely that to undo the pervasive bigotry in our culture against homosexuals there will be some necessary education, and legislating of employment laws, just as there has been with women and other minorities. The “mandatory indoctrination” Gagnon fears is no more sinister than the same kind of education now given around the nation to correct the errors of Manifest Destiny, or White Superiority, or Patriarchy. This kind of honest engagement with the sins of our society is exactly what education should be.
